The simple answer is: A large mass collided into baby Earth billions of years ago.

The long answer: The collision resulted in two things:

The first being the axis being tilted as you mentioned. This tilt is what gave us seasons (the sun shines more sunlight on different parts of the planet depending on where the Earth is in its orbit. Without seasons, we wouldn't be here.

The second one is the mass amounts of lava and debris that blasted out into space from the impact. Over time, this debris collected and formed our moon. The moon slowed Earth's rotation just enough to give us 24 hour days. It essentially keeps Earth perfectly balanced. The perfect counter-weight if you will.

"Tilted" or "straight" depend on what your plane of reference is. The Earth orbits around the Sun in a plane called the "ecliptic". The other planets in the solar system are in orbits that aren't exactly the same plane as ours; is our orbit tilted, or is theirs tilted? Perhaps we should go with the biggest planet, Jupiter? No, we live here on Earth, so our orbit is straight and the other planets are "tilted".

Compared to the plane of the Earth's orbit, or the "ecliptic", the Earth's axis of spin is "tilted" by an angle of 23.45 degrees. One of the effects of this "tilt" is that the Sun appears to move north and south of the equator through the course of the year, which causes our seasons. If the Earth's axis wasn't tilted, the weather would be fairly constant; we think.

Of course, the Sun and our entire solar system are orbiting around the center of the Milky Way galaxy, and the plane of the Sun's orbit around the galaxy is "tilted" at about a 60 degree angle to the plane of the ecliptic!

There isn't a special fundamental reason it's tilted in exactly the way it is. The reason it's tilted at all is that various impacts during the accretion process were not precisely symmetrical.
