Why is google earth using an older satellite photo of your house than a few years ago?

On average the image in Google Earth and Google Maps is 3 years old.
This is largely due to the staggering size of the planet and data requirements to capture it all, and the lengthy time needed to process imagery from a variety of sources into the Google imagery database, in addition to the costs of getting the imagery. See related links for details.

Google tries to keep imagery less than 3 years so if the imagery where your house is located is older then you can report it to Google. As of 2012, 75% of the world can see their house and neighborhood in high-resolution on Google Earth and Google Maps. Google Maps doesn't let you toggle between current and historical imagery as does Google Earth. In Google Earth select 'Historical Imagery' under View menu. This shows a timeline slider from which to select available satellite and aerial imagery allowing you to travel back in time to see how things looked in the past.
Why did street view disappear with Google Earth 6?
Here is one of Google's announcements of ending Street View support for Google Earth versions 5.x and older. "With the most recent update to Google Earth (6.2), we are also finalizing our transition to a new method of delivering Street View imagery in Google Earth. This means, that the older versions of Google Earth (anything before 6.0) will no longer be able to access Street View. We held off making this change until now, when the vast majority of Google Earth users are on 6.0 (or later)." -- Google Jan 2012. Basically, Google decided to improve the Street View interfaces which would be implemented in the current versions of Google Earth for desktop and mobile platforms rather than keep supporting the older (less efficient) method of accessing Street View.
