That he is the first European known to sail around the southern tip of Africa and that he witnessed the discovery of the future Brazil are two reasons why Bartolomeu Dias (c. 1451-May 29, 1500) is important to history.

Specifically, Bartolomeu participated in an expedition of 1487-1488. The expedition's purpose was finding a sea route to India and setting up direct trade arrangements with Indians. The overland trade route was controlled by the Muslim middlemen of the Middle East.

Dias also was one of the first Europeans known to have discovered the Land of the True Cross. He was a member of the expedition led by Pedro Alvares Cabral (1467? 1468? 1469? - c. 1520) in 1500. Through a navigation error, the expedition ended up off the coast of the subsequent Brazil.

Bartolomeu Dias was influenced by the maritime explorations of the Portuguese during the Age of Discovery, the desire for finding new trade routes to Asia, and his own interest in exploration and discovery. He was motivated by the potential for fame and fortune that successful expeditions could bring, as well as the sense of national pride in expanding Portuguese influence.

One influence upon how Bartolomeu Dias [c. 1450-May 29, 1500] led his life may have been his family background. For he is described as the member of a noble family. Therefore, his family would have sent him to be educated at the Royal Court in Lisbon. And, in fact, he became a member of the royal household, and a student, at an early age. Portuguese historians suggest that Dias may have been descended from a line of seafarers. That would have directed his tutors to emphasize, in his education, the acquisition of the scientific, observational, mathematical and engineering skills needed to navigate. And Dias lived during the years that John II [1455-1495] was King. The King continued the interests of his forebears in navigation, for colonization and trade. And so Dias would have been motivated to be at the forefront of the discoveries. Additionally, Dias was Catholic. At the time, there was much talk about challenging the power of the Muslim middlemen in setting the terms of trade with Asia. There also was much talk about a Christian kingdom of Prester John. And so Dias would have been motivated to help in the attempt to gain control over transportation and trade, and to join forces with the legendary Prester John.

This is most likely incorrect seeing as Bartolomeu was born in 1450 and the first bicycles were invented in 1817. He did not live long enough to see bicycles' debut.
