The 14th amendment is part of the "civil war" amendments providing for the rights of citizenship, voting for former slaves. It also states that "no state shall make or enforce any law which shall abridge the privileges or immunities of citizens of the United States; nor shall any state deprive any person of life, liberty or property without the due process of law; nor deny to any person within it jurisdiction the equal protection of the laws." This has been used by the Supreme Court to provide for the Miranda decision, death penalty decisions, and other decisions that affect all of us everyday. The "due process of law" is a clause that is very important and means that there must be a reason why you are arrested and that the arrest must follow a set of rules to be valid. The idea that you have an equal protection of the laws is also important because this means you can't be profiled because of WHO you are and if you are you have a means to fight the charges.
