When WWI broke out the German Empire joined the Austrian-Hungarian Empire and vowed to protect their ally at all cost. Italy declared neutrality. While true the Triple Alliance provided that each country part of the alliance would come to the defense of the other, Italy claimed that they had no obligations because the Austrian-Hungarian Empire declared war first thus was not being attacked or threatened.
