The 2001 Chevy Cavalier automatic transmission shift linkage is held in place with a swivel nut on each end of the shift linkage. Turn the swivel nuts to the left and the shifting linkage will come off. Reverse the process to install your new shift linkage.

If it's an automatic transmission, it is attached to the transmission where the shift linkage is attached.
If it has an automatic transmission, I'd check the neutral safety switch. It should be acivated by the shift leaver or the linkage. If it has a standard transmission, I would check the safety switch activated by the clutch pedal.
