Pain and suffering is difficulty to quantify and in most states you cannot sue for "pain and suffering." It's too vague. If you had knee surgery, you can sue for your medical bills, lost wages, any replacement services (such as someone to clean your house or mow your lawn) and for future medical treatment, such as physical therapy. Your injury is considered permanent if there's hardware (and a scar) so that's part of your future treatment. Also if your injury prevented the regular enjoyment of a particular hobby or leisure activity. That's difficult to assess also, but using it as an example can strengthen your claim that you were in pain and your life was disrupted.
