Marketing Dictionary: Direct Marketing Association (DMA)

Association of direct marketing organizations and their suppliers. Its mission is to promote, through responsible self-regulation, the reputation of the industry and to protect its freedom to operate unencumbered by legal restrictions, and also to provide its members with educational tools and a forum for sharing ideas. The DMA includes several special-interest councils, such as the list council, circulation council, Catalog Council, and Non Profit Council. The DMA presents the annual echo award and caples award for direct marketing excellence. The DMA maintains the national mail preference service and telephone preference service to protect consumers from unwanted advertising mail and phone calls and to support its efforts to lobby against privacy legislation. Promoting consumer confidence in Internet privacy, the DMA also maintains the internet alliance as an independent subsidiary. Previously known as the Direct Mail Marketing Association, the DMA is headquartered in New York City. The DMA can be reached at www.the-dma.org.
