Biography

Although Trey Songz loved hip-hop while growing up, the only R&B he could get into was R. Kelly. When his friends heard his perfect tenor voice, however, they pushed him to drop rap and start crooning. Songz did just that, and after winning numerous talent shows in his native Petersburg, VA, the 15-year-old singer met Troy Taylor, who had worked behind the scenes with such artists as Patti LaBelle, SWV, and B2K. Taylor encouraged Trey to finish high school first, and then they could talk about a possible music career.

Trey received his diploma and immediately moved to New Jersey to work with Taylor. Soon, the singer was appearing on Kevin Lyttle's debut album and Trick Daddy's Thug Matrimony as a sideman, as well as striking out on his own with "About the Game," a solo cut from the Coach Carter soundtrack. As he was working on his debut album -- not to mention several collaborations with Lil' Kim, Trina, and Snoop Dogg -- Trey Songz released some street-level mixtapes under his alias, the Prince of Virginia. His proper debut, I Gotta Make It, was released by Atlantic Records in 2005, and the sophomore effort, Trey Day, charted at number 11 upon its release in 2007. In 2009 the single "I Need a Girl" announced the coming of his third album, Ready. ~ David Jeffries, All Music Guide

Life and career

1984–2004: Early life

Songz was born Tremaine Aldon Neverson on November 28, 1984, in Petersburg, Virginia.[1] Raised a military brat, he recognized his vocal abilities at the age of 14.[2] Reluctant to sing, he began performing with encouragement by friends and family. Record producer Troy Taylor discovered Songz during a talent show, which led him to a record contract with Atlantic Records.[2] After graduating from high school, Songz moved to New Jersey to begin his music career.[1]

2005–2006: I Gotta Make It

While recording his debut album, Songz released mixtapes under the alias Prince of Virginia.[1] He made an "answer track" to R. Kelly's "Trapped in the Closet", entitled "Open the Closet".[3] His debut album, I Gotta Make It was released in July 2005 by Atlantic Records.[4][4] It debuted at number 20 on the Billboard 200, domestically selling over 10,000 copies in its first week of sales.[citation needed] Songz's debut album yielded the singles Gotta Make It, debuted on the Billboard Hot 100 at number 87, and on the Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs charts at number 21, becoming his first Top 40 R&B hit. Another single, Gotta Go, peaked at number 67 on the Hot 100 and on the Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs, at number 11.[citation needed]

2007–2008: Trey Day

Songz released his second studio album, Trey Day, in October 2007. The album again had only featured guest appearances by Bun B, who appeared on the opening track, and Jim Jones. Production on Songz's second album had included, Bryan-Michael Cox, R. Kelly, James Harris, Terry Lewis, Andrew Harr, Bernard Freeman, Floyd Hills, alongside Tamir "Nokio" Ruffin, Justin Haro, and M.S. Eriksen. The album debuted at number 11 on the Billboard 200,[5] selling more units than his previous album, I Gotta Make It.[citation needed] The lead single, "Wonder Woman", peaked at number 54 on the Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs chart, but failed to chart on the Billboard Hot 100.

The second single, "Can't Help but Wait", peaked at number 14 on the Billboard Hot 100, and at number two on the Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs chart; it became Songz's highest charting debut on the Hot 100, and his first-charting R&B single on the R&B charts.[citation needed] "Can't Help But Wait" charted at number 74 on the Billboard Pop 100 in February 2008. The third single off of "Trey Day", "Last Time", peaked on number 69 on the Billboard Hot 100, and at number nine on the Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs. In 2008, Songz was nominated for a BET Award for Best Male R&B Artist.[6]

2009–present: Ready

In 2009, "Can't Help but Wait" earned Songz a nomination for Best Male R&B Vocal Performance at the 2009 Grammy Awards ceremony.[7] He announced the upcoming release of his third album, Ready, was released in September 2009. Prior to the release of Ready, Songz released a mixtape titled Anticipation in June 2009 through his blog.[8] This mixtape is the second mixtape released by Trey Songz in 2009, with the first being titled Genesis. Genesis was a collection of Trey Songz first recordings when he was fifteen years old and was released to show his fans the dedication that he had to making a record when he was young.[9] Ready is preceded by the first single, "I Need a Girl". The album debuted at number three on the Billboard 200, selling 131,000 copies in its first week.[10]

The lead single from Ready, the Johnta Austin-penned, "I Need a Girl" which was a hit on the Billboard Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs, peaking at number five, and so far peaked at number 59 on the Billboard Hot 100. The second single, "Successful", featuring Canadian entertainer Drake, has peaked at number 17 on the Billboard Hot 100, and has given Songz his second top 20 hit. The album is in talks for the 52nd Grammy Awards, for Best Contemporary R&B Album, as well as other nominations.
