East Germany (the communist part) built the wall to stop people from escaping to West Germany. Many people fled through Berlin at that time.
After the wall was built it became very difficult for people to visit their relatives on the other side, much more so for those living in the east. Some people did not see their family for over 40 years until the wall fell.
Some did and some didn't. People that were for communism thought that the wall was a good idea, but people who were not able to see there families as the wall was built overnight, had a different perspective(outlook).

People immigrated or defected to the US; that's why they built the Berlin Wall to stop people from leaving their side of the line.

The Berlin Wall was built in Germany in August of 1961. The Berlin Wall was built to separate East Germany and East Berlin from West Berlin. The Berlin Wall was destroyed in 1990 which allowed for unification of West and East Berlin.
