1. First and foremost

Sumimasen. Sue Me Mah Sen. Translated it means excuse me or sorry. But It is almost the most versatile phrase there is. Japanese use it for excuse me or sorry, to get attention, to politely start a conversation/question. It's also used for thank-you and even please.

2. kore WA(this when it's closest to the speaker), sore WA(closest to listener), are WA (far from both speaker and listener)

3....onegai shimasu (please do for me) for what you want to buy. eg, kore WA onegai shimasu (this please)

4....ikura desu ka (how much) eg, sore WA ikura desu ka (how much is this/that)

5.nihongo ga hanase-masen (I cant speak Japanese)

6. eigo ga wakarimasu ka (do you understand English?)

7. biru ippon/hitotsu onegai shimasu (1 bottle/other of beer please)

8. awa nashi onegai shimasu (no head on the beer - in Japan 60-70% beer and 40-30% head is a good pour be aware your glass comes with the tide out but that is normal of all drinks)

9.wasabi nuki (no wasabi)

10.kujira arimasu ka (do you have whale?) You'd be amazed who ends up with this research product.

Okay after 4 I left to drink and then returned so it's a little ummmm, well you decide how useful it could be. :-)

By the way it really, really helps if you learn how to pronounce the vowels, Japanese people are not used to hearing foreigners speak Japanese so their listening skills are pretty poor. Get those vowels right and the rest (for the basic day to day stuff anyway) is easy.
