Buffalo nickels* only have the mint mark on the back. You're probably seeing the designer's monogram on the front of the coin.

In any case, a 1920-S nickel is worth about $4 in very worn condition. However, values go up steeply from there. In slightly worn condition, this coin might retail for as much as $100.

(*) FWIW, the coin is a NICKEL rather than "nickle"

Value of 1820 silver bufflow 5 cent?

To set things straight, it would be "buffalo" rather than "bufflow". Also it can't be 1820 because the first nickels weren't made till 1866 and buffalo nickels were issued from 1913 to 1938. And finally it can't be silver because buffalo nickels are made from copper-nickel, like all other nickels except the famous "war nickels" from 1942-45.If your coin is dated 1920, please see the Related Question for more information.

How much is a silver buffalo nickel made in 1920 worth?

The Buffalo/Indian Head Nickel's composition was 75% copper and 25% nickel. The only war-time silver nickels were from 1942 to 1945. A well-circulated 1920 nickel values from 5 cents to 2 dollars. If never circulated with original luster and full horn in reverse could be over $100 for a 1920-D. If the color is silver toned or shiny then it could be the original strike or has been cleaned or dipped in a cleaner.

What is the value of a silver buffalo nickel?

Please don't assume that because a coin is old it has to be made out of silver. Buffalo nickels were issued from 1913 to 1938 and all were struck in an alloy of copper and nickel. There has never been a silver buffalo nickel. If you can see the coin's date on the front, please enter a new question in the form "What is the value of a <date> US nickel" in the large box at the top of the page and click the GO button. (<date> is of course your coin's actual date, like 1920 or 1936) If the date isn't visible on the front (a common problem with buffalo nickels) it's called a "cull" and is worth at most 10 or 15 cents.

Is a 1923 Indian Head Nickel you received as change worth anything more than a nickel?

In average circulated condition, it's worth about a dollar. If the buffalo's horn is full & complete, it's worth about $10 If there is an "S" mintmark, on the back, beneath FIVE CENTS, then in average circulated condition, it's worth about $5. And if the buffalo's horn is full & complete, it's worth about $200 About $3 in worn condition, $5 with moderate wear, $12 with only slight wear
