My suggestion is to look for a wire that has a break in the insulation. When it makes contact, the heater runs. Did the car also suffer from some blown fusesalso?

You need to check your coolant level in your radiator and overflow and make sure the coolant to water ratio is mixed properly at 50/50.
Hit the button a few good times with a rubber mallet fairly hard - no joke - it fixed mine - I used a rubber handled screwdriver for my mallet

The clock timer on your immersion heater is for you to program the heater to run at certain temperatures at certain times. You can contact your utility company and ask what the off peak or low demand hours are. Those times it is less costly to run your heater.
