Was the battery or power recently disconnected if so the ignitation key has to be cycled 25 times before it will engage into 4wd high. Turn key on and off 25 times should go right in (as per GM Service manual)

1994 through 2004 should be interchangeable without no problems, some of the four wheel drive models are not. If you have locking hubs for your four wheel drive and the transmission on the other is not then you would have to convert it. Mine has the selector switches on the dash with the AWD option. As long as it is the same make you should have no problems.
