There are pages and pages and items that can cause a check engine light. You need to have it checked for codes with a scan tool. After repair light can be shut off with scan tool.

After repairing the cause of the code, you can clear it with a scan tool.
The check engine light on the 1998 Buick Park Avenue can be reset by disconnecting the battery for a few minutes and then reconnecting it. The check engine light is only going to stay off if the problem that created the light is fixed.

If the check engine light is on then have it scanned for codes. I could guess you into bankruptsy. It is cheaper to have it scanned and repaired.
Is this a v6 engine? Does it occur only under load (in gear, wors if you power brake lightly)? If the answer to these questions is yes, it is an ignition fault, probably the wires but check for worn plugs or weak coils also.
just take the negative off the battery for about 5 minutes put back on battery and that should reset it
