This sounds similar to what recently happened to me so I will share with you what others have shared with me. First of all, I'm assuming that you didn't just run out of gas because you already checked that, right? Next, check to see if your timing chain/belt is broken. If your car has a distibutor, take off the cap, have someone turn the key, and check to see if the rotor is turning. If you don't have a distributor, take off the oil cap and look to see if you can see anything turning in there when the key is turned. If the timing chain/belt is broken nothing will be moving. If you see the rotor turn then the timing chain/belt is not broken. If you have no distributor and can't see inside the engine compartment, you will have to take of the valve covers, like I did. When I did this it became clearly obvious what the problem was. The timing chain was visibly broken and all wrapped up in there pretty tight. Now as soon as someone responds to my question of how to remove the crankshaft pulley and timing chain cover so I can replace mine I will add to my answer so you can fix yours, if indeed that is what the problem is. Hope this helps...
Also sometimes the ignition coil will stop working...being that heat eventually can cause the coil to fail. Just part of a faulty design concept by Mazda in their '93-'97 i4 models. Replace the distributor after you've checked everything else...available at a salvage yard or my personal favorite Ebay.

Septicemia is a bacterial infection of the blood. It will lead to multiple organ system failure because of the toxins released into the blood stream that will interrupt their normal functions. Ultimately it will lead to kidney failure, and shortly after, death.
Erma Bombeck didn't die of cancer. She got kidney disease. So she had to get a kidney transplant. Shortly after she died of kidney failure.
The explosion of the space shuttle Challenger was caused by a failure of an O-ring on it's right solid rocket booster shortly after liftoff.

Shortly is not a verb but instead is an adverb. An adverb is used to modify another adverb, phrase, clause, adjective or a verb. An example of shortly used in a sentence is, she left shortly after he did.
"Shortly" is usually an adverb, used to describe when something will happen soon or briefly.
No, it's an adjective. The adverb is shortly. Actually there are instances where "short" is used as an adverb. For instance, "The car stopped short" (meaning abruptly), and "Jon was a bit short with me" (meaning curt), are two examples. In the majority of cases, however, the word is used as an adjective.
