Collapsed Hydraulic Valve lifter? Try chemical available at auto parts store The ticking is your lifters. They may just need cleaning. Try a can of Seafoam Motor Treatment . It is an excellent product I have used for years. Pour it into the crankcase and run the engine for 500 miles then change the oil & filter. Follow the directions on the can. You do not have to drain any oil out just add a full can of Seafoam. You can purchase it at most Auto Parts stores, marine stores, and at some Walmarts. You may have to do this two times to get good results. Also make sure you are using the correct weight oil, which in your case would be 5w30. Also install an AC/Delco filter. The AC/Delco is one of the best filters you can buy. If you cannot find and AC/Delco install a Purolator or Wix filter. If none of this works seek professional help.
if ticking noise is in engine, u most likely have a worn hydraulic lifter. check oil for correct volume and viscocity

If the ticking is coming from the top of the engine it is likely the Hydraulic (valve) Lash Adjusters.A fresh oil change using a quality oil and ***an OEM filter from the dealership*** should clear the noise up within 15 minutes of driving.Use of a non-OEM filter can cause valve train ticking noise.

Normally loose tappets will cause a ticking sound in the engine. Depending on if you have mechanical or hydraulic tappets you may need to have them replaced or simply adjusted.
have found that a ticking noise on the passenger side (under the dash) in the heater b5pdox (you can feel the vibration) on a 1997 town car is probably a vaccumn control switch.
The 3.0L engine had a problem with the lifters that would cause the top end to tick. There is a TSB i believe on how to fix it. If the ticking is coming from the bottom of the engine (sometimes hard to tell) then you might have a Con-Rod knock that starting to show. Eitherway take it to a mechanic for diagnoses.
The engine computer is the voltage regulator in a 1997 Jeep Grand Cherokee.
