The "range reading" is calculated by the computer using the current MPG times the number of gallons the system computes are in the tank. The decreased/increased reading would mean that your miles per gallon have changed. You can reset your MPG using the Driver Information Center (DIC) that you get the range reading from. Push and hold the reset button as you have the MPG up on the screen, then that will reset all of your readings on the DIC. Then as you drive your car the numbers will change rapidly until the computer settles on the actual MPG that you are getting based on your driving habits. Remember that just "flooring" the engine will cause a SHARP drop in MPG in these cars, just the nature of the beast. C White 2000 GP 3.8 No turbo, but everything else!
