Backup your drive asap, then run a chkdsk with error repairs. If this fails contact dell if still under warranty and get the drive replaced.
If not under warranty buy a drive elsewhere it will be far cheaper than buying one from dell. Let me know the model number and I'll tell you whether you need SATA or IDE 2.5" drive.

You can use any of S.M.A.R.T. status monitoring tools, for example Active SMART http://www.ariolic.com/activesmart/ or DriveHealth or HDDLife. All of them retrive the SMART status of the hard drive, analyse it or show it to the user, so one can check if the hard drive about to fail or it is completely OK. Anyway, it's useful to know what the hard drive can say itself about its status.
Verifies correct operation of the drive heads
In short, no. Cars designed to be driven WITH power steering are unsafe to drive when the power steering system has failed. If you've lost steering due to a broken belt, I suppose it might be safer to drive it that way than to park on a busy highway shoulder.
fill tires with proper air pressure, if the light remains on after a short drive you probably have a failed tire pressure sensor. Replacement of sensor necessary.

My hard drive recently failed. had a short dst 303 error when I did a start up test (after many failed attempts at starting) and now i need a new hard drive I have an hp pavilion dv7 428dx (i can't remember the model number cuz I'm at work right now but it's something like that) my question is after I put a new one in how Do I get windows 7 back on it... I'm sure a factory restore won't work seeing how it's a new hard drive and I don't have any disks. I had geek squad set it up like 2yrs ago and my warranty is expired please help
