Have the battery checked and if it is the OEM battery just replace it as it is 7 years old. Inspect the battery cables and clean the connections at the battery posts. Make sure nothing is on, as in a truck light, glove box light, etc. Check the alternator to see if it is performing properly. It should read 13.5-16 volts at the battery with the engine running.

If it's not disengaging like its supposed to. See if it's retracted from the flywheel after it is started. NEW ANSWER: NO it will not, The starter has nothing to do with the way the engine runs. The starter only turns the engine over so it will start. If the starter is draging then you do need to replace it.

If you can hear your starter motor turning but not the engine you have some teeth missing on the ring gear. If you can hear nothing, not even the starter motor solenoid clicking into place, you have a connection problem between ignition switch and starter motor.
