Look on the right side of the engine, just a little below the valve cover. About half way back, a 401 will be stamped with a raised 4 0 1, Clever, huh? You'll probably need a flashlight, may have to wipe away some grime, but that's where you look.
they normally came with a 258 6 cylinder. The base V8 was a 301. 304ci Sorry, my mistake. It was a 304.

Standard or optional? Standard engine was the 232 six. V-8s were the 304, 360 and the 401. the 304 and 360 had a choice of two-barrel or four barrel carbonation while the 401 was four-barrel only. "68 and '69s v-8s were 290s, 343s and a 390.
