At cylinder 1, should be labeled on distributor cap.
Double check, then triple check your firing order. Especially which distributor post is #1. Sounds like you're one off.
At spark plug location number 1. Number 1 plug is on the drivers side front of engine.

Assuming you mean distributor cap and rotor, yes, if you mixed up the firing order.
The firing order for your 4.9 L ( 300 cubic inch ) straight 6 cylinder is ( 1 - 5 - 3 - 6 - 2 - 4 ) The distributor rotor rotates CLOCKWISE The engine cylinders are numbered 1 to 6 starting from the front of the engine going to the rear of the engine on the distributor cap , # 1 position faces away from the engine , if the # 1 position is beside the engine , the cap is installed 180 degrees out, flip it around .
Check the distributor
Line up number one cylinder on the compression stroke to TDC. Remove distributor cap and take note where the rotor lines up to which post on the cap, that would be the starting point for number one. The firing order from there would be 1, 5, 3, 6, 2, 4 clockwise.
If the starter is still rotating the crankshaft upon turning the key in the ignition, AND there is a charge from the ignition coil to the distributor, the problem is most likely that 1. The distributor is improperly timed and/or calibrated for the engine in which it is placed, 2. The distributor is the incorrect type for the engine it is attached to, or 3. the mechanical linkages that spin the rotor are defective or incorrectly installed.
