The problem might be your tps (Throttle position sensor) my buddy had the same problem with his car and that's what was causing the problem.
Rough idling is whenever the vehicle's motor "misses" or does not fire causing an imbalance and a loss of rotation reducing the motor's power and causing excessive shaking.
As the vehicle sits idling the driveshaft is not rotating.

the only thing i can think of is a crack in the intake manifold. my cavalier's manifold cracked and it was idling at like 2500RPM as opposed to the normal 1000-1500, also i had trouble with my brakes and misc other problems because of the crack. if it is just idling too high and there are no other problems i would guess that it is just compensating for the cold. if there are other little issues, i would look into having your intake manifold checked out. gotta take care of your baby because cavaliers are such great cars...... :p
no
a dirty air filter or a dirty fuel filter will cause a diesel to smoke
Mechanical Energy, because of the movement of the car. however, when idling, there is potential energy.
This fluctuation is caused by common use. The temperature will be higher when the vehicle is idling because there is no air moving over the engine like it does when the car is in motion.
My guess would be to look at the motor mounts to see if they are loose or broken.
Cracked Fly Wheel
My 1986 Honda Accord Dx just started idling rough and dieing at turns and stops it is a carburated 2.0 witha maunal transmission
you most likely have a horrible fuel sensory causing your car to be bad at idling. also you may hvae reved your engine to hard and that is causing it to idle.
