97 Pontiac sunfire 2.4L twin cam will not start it has been sitting still and not started for over a year while I was in Iraq Has a new battery but will not turn over. Has a half tank of gas in it?

I think there's a communication problem here. Turning over doesn't have anything to do with gas. Grab another car that runs. Disconnect the sparkplug wires and try to start it. That a "Cranks- no start".
Now reconnect the wires. Remove the key and put it in your pocket. Try to start the car. The sound of a "no-start no-crank." Which is your sunfire sounding more like?
