What the function of the diencephalon?

The diencephalon is the part of the forebrain that contains such important structures as the thalamus, hypothalamus and the posterior portion of the pituitary gland. The hypothalamus performs numerous vital functions, most of which relate directly or indirectly to the regulation of visceral activities by way of other brain regions and the autonomic nervous system. (jano purificacion) I looked into this as well before I knew there was an answer for it on here. According to graphs I have seen the Diencephalon is part of the brain stem, and it connects all the thalamus families together.
