The doctor is looking at the growth plates which are located at the ends of long bones. If the growth plated have ossified this means that the person will not grow any more. Long bones do not grow from the middle outward they grow from the ends of the bones through constantly dividing and adding new bone. The x-rays will reveal this. If is determined that the bones are still growing then doctor will not give the growth hormone.
