Iraq has been extremely popular for the media and public ever since Desert Storm in '91. For two reasons: Armageddon the popular bibical name for the old battlefield of Megiddo in or near Israel & and The Bible itself. Since Iraq is right next door to those historical events/sources (or legends, depending upon whose giving the lecture), people are interested in events there.
"IF" today's young people (today's 20 something generation) were to visit the 1960's in a time machine, they would witness monthly occurrences of military confrontations in that region. In fact, combat in those regions were so common, few in America, Britain & Europe paid little heed to them. Being in the midst of a serious cold war (a potential atomic war), the superpowers had bigger fish to fry.
Now that big fish is gone. So the little fish get a lot of attention now.
