The decisive Union victory at Perryville made the Confederate Army under Braxton Bragg give up the invasion of Kentucky and retreat in Tennessee, taking position at Murfresborough.
ANSWER On Oct.1,1862 the Union Army under Gen. Buell set out from Louisville marching southeast against Bragg's Confederate Army standing at Bardstown. The Union won Ft. Henry, Ft. Donelson, Shiloh, and Perryville, among others.
The Battle of Perryville took place in the Western theater of the war. It was in Kentucky and if one side could claim a victory it could have been a significant blow to the other side. The battle pitted the forces of Confederate General Braxton Bragg against Union General Don Carlos Beull. The battle proved to be inconclusive. Technically Kentucky being a neutral border state should have been off grounds for a battle. It was a slave state however, and Confederate President Jefferson Davis badly wanted it to be a Confederate state.
Union General James Barnet Fry graduated from West Point in 1847. He was ranked 14th in his graduating class of 38 cadets. Fry served in the Western Theater of the US Civil War. He participated in the important Battle of Shiloh, the siege of Corinth and the Battle of Perryville.
Confederate General Braxton Bragg was on the march to Frankfort, Kentucky in the Fall of 1862. One of his main goals was to help establish a pro-Confederate governor there and help rally Kentucky into the Confederacy. Union General Don Carlos Buell would soon end up being Bragg's obstacle in that mission. No one actually chose Perryville as the place to hold a battle. On top of that, Buell had political problems hanging over him. He had earlier been dismissed by the War Department then reinstated. Perryville became the battle ground due to the maneuvering by Buell and his army was short on water. He was seeking a fresh water creek . Neither army was battle ready when they met. And, neither side would employ all their forces. Bragg was immobilized by Union troop movements near his target of Frankfort. Most of the Union fighting burden fell on General Alexander McCook's I Corps . In the history books the battle is often called a technical victory by Bragg.
The Battles of Perryville (also known as the Battle of Chaplin Hills) and the Battle of Mill Springs (also known as the Battle of Fishing Creek and the Battle of Logan's Cross Roads) were part of the Confederate Heartland Offensive (also called the Kentucky Campaign) involving the Confederate Army of the Mississippi's effort to retake the border state of Kentucky. While the Confederates won the bigger and much later battle at Perryville and lost the much smaller battle of Mill Springs it was in fact a strategic Union victory because the Army of Mississippi was forced to withdraw through the Cumberland Gap into East Tennessee..
