After you put new head gaskets on a '95 Mitsubishi Galant and the head pressure tested fine but the car still smokes badly with white smoke out the back end do you need a new motor?

White smoke usually means buring oil. This could be from value seals leaking or worn out piston rings. Neither are minor repairs.

Corrected HeadlineWhite smoke never means burning oil. Blue smoke signifies oil. White smoke indicates water/coolant leaking into the combustion chamber. After doing a head gasket job, you often need to run the car about 30 miles before all smoke disappears from the exhaust. If smoke is still appearing, I would recommend draining gas tank (may have been tampered with) or checking for leaks at the freeze plugs.

Also it may be that the cylinder head and block may not of been cleaned enough of debris before puting new one on. And propper sealing and torque is needed too. Its a good rule of thumb to replace old bolts and nuts with new ones due to the old ones, ounce loosening them up after ages it just needs replacing.

From Experience With The Same Car:

A few questions to ask the mechanic who did it:

1. Was The Head Skimmed To Make Shure It Wasent Warped
2. Was The Gaskets Applied To A Clear And Clean Surface
3. Has The Pins Been Torqued Up Correctly
4. Have the Pins Been Replaced? have to consider the factor that the old ones were stretched.
5. An odd one but was the coolent drained before stripping the head?

i also have a galant that has also had a head gasket set replaced,,, these were the things discussed by the mechanic before hand.

and white is definatly coolent blue is oil... so the piston rings should be fine.

TAKE YOUR GALANT TO A REPUTABLE MECHANIC. ASK HIM TO DO A "HEAD GASKET LEAK" TEST THROUGH THE RADIATOR. HE WILL PUT A RADIATOR CAP DEVICE ON THE RADIATOR IN PLACE OF THE RAD CAP TO CHECK FOR SYSTEM PRESSURE. ANOTHER TEST IS TO PUT AN AGENT INTO THE COOLING SYSTEM. THE COOLANT WILL CHANGE COLOR AT THE PRESENCE OF EXHAUST GASSES. THE PRESSURE TEST IS BEST BECAUSE IT WILL TELL YOU IF NEW HEAD GASKETS "SEALED" THE HEAD WITH THE BLOCK. IF THE HEAD WAS WARPED OR IF INSUFFICIENT TORQUE WAS APPLIED-TO HEAD BOLTS, A "COMPLETE" SEAL MAY NOT HAVE OCCURED.
