No they did not. At the outbreak of WW2 in 1939 the US was operating under a political system known as "isolationism", basically they didn't see a war in Europe as their problem. It was only after the Japanese attacks on Midway and Pearl Harbour that the US decided to join the Allied forces and fight in WW2
