The US was first active in French Indochina during World War II (in the Pacific from 1941 to 1945). The French lost their war to keep Vietnam in 1954, and the country was divided between northern and southern factions.

The US became increasing involved with the southern half (South Vietnam) during the Cold War, during which the North followed mainland China into Communism and then became a client state of the Soviet Union.
