In Ancient Greece, there were not a lot of fertile river valleys that other early civilizations relied on in Greece, so unusual crops that could be suited to the mountainous region were extremely popular, one example being olive trees. This was not limited to just crops though, as animals like goats who were already adapted to the region were also popular farm animals for most farmers to own.

Then, Athens made itself more popular by encorpating gods into their history, such as the tale where Athena and Poseidon battled for their domain, causing their location to seem sacred and deeply desired, thus increasing their popularity.
