I would start by checking to see if your operator presence switch is still working properly. Located under the seat, this switch is designed to shut the tractor down if the operator were to fall off the tractor suddenly. The clutch on your tractor would bypass that switch until the clutch was let out.
I'm in the process of changing out the drive belt and I got a diagram from my local John Deere dealer. NOTE!!.....There is an adjustment to be made on the idler pulley, which is directly underneath the seat. The pulley itself obscures this slot and I learned the hard way....so I have to take it apart (again) and tighten the belt. Be sure and grease your pulleys when you have the mower deck off as the grease zerks are hard to get to and this is an oppotune time to do this.
unscrew the air filter on top of the carb. It is a triangular shape box in the top left front of the motor. Unclip the black fuel line. Unscrew the carb from the head. There are two rods that go to the throdle body and the other to the choke( i think)/ you have to be carefull not to bend and twist these 2 rods. Just kind of wiggle them out of their hole in the carburetor by moving the carb around the cables. Once free replace the gasket and reverse these procedures
Look at the oil fill. The place where the dip-stick is. You will see a metal clamp. Follow that clamp to the front. There you will see a black wire. That is the wire that goes to the spark plug. Gently pull the wire off and then you will see the spark plug. You will need the the long 1/2" socket in order to fit into the space to loosen the plug. When you put the new plug in,use the socket to help you. It will be easier for you. Your fingers will not fit. Good luck, Lou
