Injectors leaking. Raw fuel is making its way into the exhaust through the engine. This is not safe. Take it to the dealer.
Definitively. Small cars are not as safe as large cars, generally speaking. Cars like the Toyota Yaris, Nissan Versa, Mercury Grand Marquis, Hyundai Accent, Ford Mustang Convertible, and the Chevy Aveo Sedan are listed by Consumer Reports as not being as safe as they could be. Volvos are safe and sexy
Mercury is a relatively safe metal, but its bad to consume and can cause poisoning. It can also "eat away" at jewelery such as gold and silver.
* because it is dangerous
There is really no safe way to repair this. You have to change the intake. This is about a 6 to 8 hour job. The oem intake has a defect. At this point Ford will not do anything for you. The old intake has a plastic cross over, which after time will crack. The new intake has been modified. Check around the net, you can find one for around 200. $
Be careful when disposing and eliminate the contact to mercury.
The older the car, the heavier the oil needs to be. Your car calls for at least 30 weight oil when it's new. I'd use straight 30 weight (SAE-30) only.
