"Regardless of the place of origin of the Philistines, whether Crete or Egypt, or anywhere else, we do know for certain how "Philistine" became "Palestine." The name Palestine originated from the Greek word pronounced Palaistina, which is derived from the Hebrew word pronounced pel-eh-sheth, meaning land of the Philistines (one of the most famous of whom was Goliath). The original word referred only to a small coastal territory corresponding to what is today Gaza, never to all of the land of Jacob, who God renamed Israel."

AnswerAfter about 1250 BCE, the Philistines occupied the coastal plains and foothills of Palestine, south from about present-day Tel Aviv. In later centuries they absorbed the culture and religious beliefs of their northern neighbours, the Canaanites, and became indistinguishable from them. The Hebrew people occupied the inland, in an area somewhat larger than today's Western Bank.

The Philistines originated on Crete. Archeologists claim that they are from the Eastern Side of the island, but no definitive evidence for that claim has yet been found.

As concerns the Philistine settlements in proximity to Ancient Israel, the Philistines occupied a territory that included the Gaza Strip and expanded northward along the coast. Major Philistine cities included Gaza, Ashkelon, and Ashdod (the latter two in Modern-day Israel).

For many centuries, the Canaanites were the inhabitants of the Levantine region we know as Palestine. After about 1250 BCE, the Philistines occupied the coastal plains and foothills south from about present-day Tel Aviv, with Canaanites occupying the rich coastal land to the north. Also from about 1250 BCE, the Hebrew people occupied the hinterland, in an area somewhat larger than today's Palestinian West Bank.

In later centuries the Philistines absorbed the culture and religious beliefs of their northern neighbours, the Canaanites, and became almost indistinguishable from them. When Greek sailors visited the Levant in the middle of the first millennium BCE, they found Palestinians there, but were unaware of the Israelites and Judahites further inland, so they named the region after the Philistines , hence 'Palestine'.

Did Israel conquer Palestine or did Palestine conquer Israel?

It is a difficult question to answer. If we review ancient history, Israel was there 5 thousand years go till about year 0. In early 20th century Israeli was mainly populated by tribes of Arab nations and Israeli settlers, and in 1948 the UN declared a two countries solution in Israel for the Jewish and the Palestinians. Therefore, Israel declared independence - followed up by war declaration from most of the Arab nations around Israel and the Arab tribes living in Israel - later be called Palestinians (by the name of the place - Palestine), Israel won the war while conquering a few areas in Israel. Another reference can be made to the name "Philistines" - which is an ancient word from the bible describing invader tribes from around Israel. Philistines in biblical Hebrew means invaders. Often times, the Palestinians are identified with the Philistines since the Roman Name "Palestine" was derived from the word "Philistine".

Which people does Palestine refer when the Romans renamed judea Palestine?

It refers to the Philistines who also lived in ancient Palestine, and with whom the Jews in ancient times had a less than friendly relationship. Judea referred to only a part of that area where the Jews were a majority. But although many people in today's Israel claim the whole of present-day Palestine as being 'their' ancestral land of Judea and Samaria, the historical fact is the the ancient Jews shared that land with several other tribes at the time (like amongst others, the Philistines and the Samaritans) and were a minority or even hardly present in several parts and cities of ancient Palestine.

What is the land that GOD had intended for Israel?

The land of Canaan, now known as Israel/Palestine, according to the Bible. The Bible nowhere uses the name "Palestine" (and should not be used on any Bible map). "Provincia Syria Palestina" was coined by the Roman Emperor Hadrian (in AD135) as a derogatory term against the Israelites, renaming their homeland after Israel's ancient nemeses the Philistines. To call any part of Israel "Palestine" is to imply that the land belongs to the Philistines who no longer exist.

Are there any scripture passages about Palestine in the Bible?

'Palestine' is the name given by the ancient Greeks to the Levant after they met the Philistines living along much of the coast and thought that the Philistines occupied the entire land. The Greeks, coming from across the Mediterranean Sea, were unaware that a different people, the Hebrews, occupied the mountainous interior. The Hebrew people gave the area their own names, particularly the inland areas they themselves occupied, Judah and Israel. And they called the coastal plains and foothills actually occupied by the Philistines, simply the land of the Philistines or Philistia. The coastal areas to the north belonged to the Canaanites. So, although most of the Bible is about the land we know of as Palestine, the Bible does not use that name.
