Allergies are kind of like an immune disorder but not in the typical sense, rather people that have allergies just have extremely reactive immune systems. Basically what this means is that when you come into contact with an allergen (dust, pollen, animal fur and so on) your body reacts to this substance in order to protect itself. the body releases histamines to defend itself against the allergen. it is this histamines that often produce the symptoms associated with allergies, such as sneezing, watery eyes and sinus congestion.

Allergies are not autoimmune diseases. The allergen, such as for example pollen, is not part of the person's own body. The immune system is reacting to something from outside the body. The problem is that the allergen is actually harmless, rather than being an invading micro-organism, so the response of the immune system is inappropriate.

An autoimmune disease comes about when the immune system attacks part of the body, mistaking it for an invading organism. With multiple sclerosis, the immune system attacks the nerves. With AIDS the immune system attacks itself. These are not allergies.
