Yes, Battery hens are given antibiotics to help prevent/control diseases caused by the crowded living space which is 4 hens squashed inside one tiny cage which is about the same size of an A4 piece of paper.
Eggs from battery hens, i.e. hens that are kept in cages (known as batteries) where several hens live together in one cage. These hens cannot roam freely as free-range hens can.
Ex battery hens are hens that have come from a commercial "Egg Factory". They have set in a wire cage all their life, and probably haven't walked in over a year.
Antibiotics are usually given to someone who is sick with an infection. There are many types of antibiotics.

Not just chickens raised in barns are given medicine. Even free range "organic" hens are given the occasional treatment. Chickens can get sick, when they do, medicine is given to make them better.
The hens in many egg producing factories are kept in tiny cages, just a bit bigger than a car battery, thus the name.
No, it is NOT right to kill battery hens. Unless they're fately ill or for food :( Every single hen has the right to have a free life.
30,000,000 chickens - 85% battery hens
antibiotics are given because they help fight diseases
The average life-span of a Battery hen is one year if they are lucky. Many are starved by farmers to gte them to lay more eggs, others die when they have there beaks removed as chicks. Visit RSPCA for more info.
I don't know the exact reason why but it could be due to their diet. I don't know if free-range hens eat the same kind of diet as battery hens but i do know that battery hens are given cheap, non-nutritional cereal. When it comes to the world of meat and egg birds, only one rule applies: - the more expensive the eggs or meat, the more horrible conditions and more torture the birds have to face.
