Yes. Asteroid impacts have been responsible for mass extinctions before; for example, al large animals on Earth were killed off when an asteroid struck the Earth about 65 million years ago. About 15 thousand years ago, an asteroid or comet probably struck northern Canada, touching off the "Younger Dryas" mini-ice age, which killed off the wooly mammoths and saber-toothed tigers among others, and probably most large animals - and humans - on North America.

Another asteroid strike WILL CERTAINLY HAPPEN. We just don't know when. Just one year ago, a small asteroid struck Russia and exploded over the city of Chelyabinsk, breaking every window in town and causing thousands of injuries. Several years ago, a smaller asteroid exploded above Sumatra, causing no damage or injuries.

What are the group of asteroids that may occasionally cross earth?

Asteroids that occasionally cross the orbit of Earth are known as Near Earth Asteroids. Asteroids that both cross the orbit of the Earth and are large enough to pose a significant threat in the event of an impact are known as Potentially Hazardous Asteroids.

Are the Trojan asteroids a threat to earth?

No, they all have a very stable orbit.

Are asteroids not a threat to us?

asteroids are a threat to us

Are the Amor asteroids the greatest threat to life on Earth?

While the Amor asteroids are considered potentially hazardous due to their orbits that can bring them close to Earth, they are not currently considered the greatest threat to life on our planet. There are other factors such as climate change, pandemics, and nuclear warfare that are considered more immediate threats to life on Earth. Efforts are being made to monitor and track these asteroids to mitigate any potential impact risks.

Why has interest in near-earth asteroids increased in recent years?

Interest in near-Earth asteroids has increased in recent years due to the potential threat they pose to Earth if they were to collide, as evidenced by past impact events. Additionally, advancements in space technology have made it more feasible to study, track, and possibly deflect these asteroids to mitigate the risk of a catastrophic impact. This has led to increased funding and missions aimed at studying and monitoring near-Earth asteroids.

Are asteroids a threat to us?

yes because if it lands on earth then it could block the sun and crops we have would not grow if it hits hard eough.

What are facts about Apollo asteroids?

Apollo asteroids are a group of near-Earth asteroids with orbits that intersect with Earth's orbit. They are named after the first asteroid of this group discovered, 1862 Apollo. Some Apollo asteroids are classified as potentially hazardous asteroids due to their close approach to Earth.

Why are asteroids and meteors pose a threat to earth?

Asteroids & meteors are celestial bodies which could'nt make into a planet.there sizes ranges from about yard to about a football field & they travel at great speeds.and when they come into contact to earth this whole of kinetic energy is converted into a huge amount of energy which could be eqivalent to some tonnes of TNT & could destroy life on earth. hence, these always pose a threat to mass extinction.

Are asteroids larger then earth?

asteroids vary in size from rock size to earth size and bigger.

What are facts about comets and asteroids?

Comets are icy bodies that originate in the outer regions of the solar system and develop tails when they approach the sun, whereas asteroids are rocky and metallic bodies that orbit the sun mainly in the asteroid belt between Mars and Jupiter. Comets are composed of ice, dust, and rocky material, while asteroids are primarily made of rock and metal. Both comets and asteroids can pose a potential threat to Earth if they collide with our planet.

Which of these hit the earth comets or asteroids?

It is possible for comets and asteroids to hit Earth, but they are extremely rare events.

What do asteroids and comets bring to the earth?

Asteroids and comets can bring elements and compounds that are not abundant on Earth, such as precious metals. They also carry water and organic molecules, which may have been essential for the development of life on our planet. However, they can also pose a threat if they collide with Earth, leading to potential devastation.
