Yes, bed bugs are real and can be a serious problem. I work at a University and we have several cases each year as many students are coming and going. Once you have bed bugs, they are very difficult to get rid of. Bed bugs are also very easy to spread to other dwellings if you are not aware you have them. If you find you have bed bugs, contact an extermination company who has experience with treating and fumigating bed bugs (most effective way is to use a trailer fumigation system). Getting rid of bed bugs is a lengthy and sometimes costly process that requires a great deal of cooperation. I'm not aware that bed bugs can be exterminated without professional help. Also, bed bugs don't just live on beds. Google "bed bugs" for more information.

People often get confused about the difference between "dust mites" and "bed bugs". Both are real microscopic insects which feed on humans directly or indirectly.

Dust mites live in bed sheets, mattresses, sleeping pillows, stuffed animals, carpeting, couches, and any materials that can get dusty and hold a lot of dust. Dust mites eat the dead skin cells from humans and pets. They enjoy warm, dark places. So, for example, it is not a good idea to go to sleep with wet hair because dust mites will be attracted to the damp pillow and will breed more in that area. Dust mites are responsible for many people's Allergies causing many call offs from school and work and requiring allergy medications or shots.

Beg bugs have become an epidemic worldwide. Many hotels are infested, especially in overseas countries. Travelers coming back to the USA have brought them home on dirty clothing that had lain on the beds in hotels, for example. Bed bugs live in bedding, mattresses, pillows, sheets, and less likely in stuffed animals unless those toys are kept in a bed. These tiny microscopic bugs attach to the skin and drink the blood of humans at night. Many people are not aware of bed bug infestations until the person awakes covered with red bites on the skin.

It is extremely difficult to get rid of both dust mites and bed bugs.

Dust mites are best fought by washing all bedding every week in hot water. The mattress must be enclosed in plastic. When you first buy a new mattress, you should immediately cover it on all sides with a mattress cover.

But beg bugs need an exterminator. The exterminator will treat the house and furniture, and it may take several treatments over several months to kill all the eggs and maturing bugs. The person will need to take off all bed linens (sheets, pillow cases, blankets, and top cover) and wash them in hot water - after every treatment. Humans and pets must be out of the house during extermination.

Both bugs cause countless lost dollars in treatment methods, and for constant re-washing of clothes and bed linens. Both cause untold costs in medical treatment, as well as creating high fear. Bed bugs in particular cause many people to feel embarrassed and ashamed because public opinion still thinks that bed bugs is caused by people who do not wash and keep their bodies clean. Instead, people "pick up" these bugs -- usually when sleeping away from home -- and bring the bugs back home with them. Most authorities recommend to keep luggage off the floor and off the beds. Keep luggage closed and do not lay clothing on the bed. Buy a pillow to use ONLY in the hotel and keep your pillow in an allergy-protective cover. Look at where you sleep before climbing into bed-- travel with a flashlight and a magnifying glass. Look at the crevasses of mattresses, especially along the seams. You may see the black, small bugs moving along the mattress, especially if the room has a high infestation. Never sleep where you see or suspect bed bugs are present. When you return home from an overseas trip, don't take the luggage into the house. Instead, go to a laundromat and wash everything. Vaccuum out the luggage and treat with a good bug killer. Leave the luggage in the garage until you are sure you didn't bring back any buggy travelers with you. If you do awaken with bites, get checked by a doctor so you can begin treatment of your body, closet/clothing, bedding, house, etc.

They most certainly are and if you are unfortunate enough to have a bedbug infestation in your bed you will not find it very funny nor pleasant. But a lot of people in Wiki Answers and elsewhere on the Net seem to get confused between bedbugs and dustmites. Bedbugs are about a centimeter or less long and are flat looking insects you can sometimes see with the naked eye in daylight, particularly if you disturb them from their hiding places while making your bed or tidying up your room. Very few beds actually have a bedbug problem Dust mites exist in virtually every person's bed in the entire world and can only be seen with a microscope. Do not let others confuse you about the difference between the two.
