Since Massachusetts has such strict gun control laws, I'm surprised that a handgun is still legal and that one isn't forced to use peashooters instead. With a class B or A

LTC (License to carry,) it is legal to own a handgun in Massachusetts. To get one, you have to be 21, a legal resident of Massachusetts, have proof of residency, and you must be aware of the safety required for shooting a handgun. You also must take a written test and have a shooting test, and if you get a certain score, then you have a chance of getting an LTC. They take a picture, fingerprints, and other information that could be used to identify you if you pass the shooting test and the written exam. The last step is that they do is a background check, because they can refuse to give you the LTC if you are a felon or if you are deemed to be insane, suicidal, or a psychopath. There is also a fee to get any firearms license in Massachusetts. Another thing to note is if it is high capacity (i.e. holding more than 10 rounds in total and semiautomatic or fully automatic), then it requires a class A LTC. Also, if you plan on having a handgun, there is a rule that you must store the ammunition and the handgun separate from each other, because if someone manages to get the box that contained the gun and the ammo, then they are armed and dangerous. You must also have a trigger lock on it at all times when not in use. Some other advice is that if you have a handgun, don't try to defend your house with it. Self defense pleas rarely work during a trial, and they will probably take away your LTC and handguns. For more information about how to get an LTC and how to get a safety course to get an LTC, look at the Mass Wildlife website. You also need a class A LTC in order to carry your gun loaded in public, but this is usually only given to law enforcement. It is extremely hard to get a class A LTC in Massachusetts, because we are very strict about gun laws.

Springfield Armory handguns will not be available in Massachusetts. Update 10/16/2009: We have heard that rumors that Springfield Armory is interested in getting some of their handguns certified for sale in MA. I hope that do but I've heard this before and nothing has ever happened. The process is not that hard. S&W certifies handguns for MA all the time...(Taken from four seasons firearms webpage)
