It's a bit complicated. Ninjas were spies and assassins that originated back in feudal Japan. Called shinobi, they were hired mercenaries that "served no one but gold". Many samurai warlords used them to spy on the other warring states. However, an equal number of lords detested their kind. You have to remember that samurai placed a lot of value in honesty. Almost all of what you have heard about ninjas are false. They were not "professional assassins" nor did they have almost supernatural skills in combat. They were mainly used for espionage and sabotage, assassinations being less common but still a part of their role. To answer your question, no, not directly. They were hired spies, nothing more.
