The final drive of a motorcycle has nothing to do with the gear selection mechanism. However, 99% of all motorcycles on the market have manual gear selection. There are very few that are automatic - Honda VFR1200 and Crosstourer, Yamaha FJR1200, Aprilia Mana 850.. there may be more, but not many. The rest of the automatics are classified as scooters, despite some larger capacities being present.

Is there a transmission in a motorcycle?

Yes there is, otherwise it would not be able to drive. The transmission is the gears, the chain and the sprocket. Some motorcycles have a drive shaft instead of a chain.

What is the function of a drive train in a vehicle?

That is a good question, but first lets name all the parts that make up the drive train. It all begins at the clutch on manuals, and the torque converter on automatics, then, there's the transmission, the drive shaft, and the differential. The differential is the final part of the drive train before power goes to the wheels. The parts I've just named are all vital parts of the drive train without one missing, it will not work. With that said, the function of the drive train is to transfer power to the wheels.

When does engine speed match drives-haft speed?

When the transmission is operating at a 1:1 ratio, also known as direct drive. In most overdrive transmissions, there isn't a gear which hits at exactly a 1:1 ratio. But if you have an older vehicle with a direct drive transmission (like most of the older three speed automatics and four speed manuals are), then your highest gear is likely a 1:1 ratio. What that means is that, for each rotation of the transmission's input shaft, there is one rotation of the output shaft, as opposed to overdrive, where the output shaft spins faster than the input shaft. Of course, when the vehicle is shut off and not in motion, the engine speed and driveshaft speed are matching then, as well.

What types of motorcycles are shaft driven?

All BMW's(except cross country), some Honda touring bikes, the Suzuki Boulevard (and the Volusia before it) and the Yamaha V Star. I bet there are others, too. Kawasaki cruisers, Ural, some Moto Guzzi. A 1953 Sunbeam 350cc is the earliest I can remember.... Triumph, Honda, Suzuki, Kawasai, and Yamaha, have produced shaft drive motorcycles Motorcycle engines positioned such that the crankshaft is longitudinal and parallel to the frame are often used for shaft driven motorcycles. This requires only one 90° turn in power transmission, rather than two. Moto Guzzi, BMW, Triumph, and Honda use this engine layout. Motorcycles with shaft drive are subject to shaft effect where the chassis climbs when power is applied. This is counteracted with systems such as BMW's Paralever, Moto Guzzi's CARC and Kawasaki's Tetralever.

Do BMWs have belts rather than chains?

The BMW F 800 series has a belt final drive, as do the new F 650. The old F 650 was a chain final drive. All other BMW motorcycles have a drive shaft as a final drive.

Who invented the drive shaft and when?

A drive shaft allows torque to enter a motor. Louis Renault of France was the inventor of the drive shaft. He invented the drive shaft in 1898.
