Some Freemasons will tell you in simplified terms that they are a group of closely-knit men that get together for fellowship both spiritually and intellectually. Now the real anti Freemasons view them in a much more devious light determined that they are out to take over the world. It would seem that their beginnings are somewhat of a mystery in itself. Even the members themselves are often unclear as to the beginning, some will tell you different stories.

The masonic lodge was created in the 1700's in Scotland, thats 400 years, give or take, between the templars being disbanded and the formation of the modern masonic lodge, probably at kilwinning. References to the knights templar and the St Clair family of Roslynn claim direct decent from there, although sketchy at best, templars may have found help in Scotland due to it being ex-communicated by the catholic church at the time and therefore a safe haven for them. This is why with the masonic lodge being created in Scotland and the link of templars being here has spurred this argument. The masons may use templar ideas though Gnostic teachings etc but this is as far as the link between the two of them end. Something also claimed is the templars helped Robert the Bruce at the battle of Bannockburn defeat the English and gain independence, although historians laugh at this claim, also the 400 years of nothing before the first lodge was started is to long a time to fill in blanks with half debated arguments.
