A number of American Alligators are present in the Tennessee River area of North Alabama. They thrive in the area due to plentiful food sources and the protection offered by the Alabama Department of Fish and Game, which maintains them as a threatened species in North Alabama. In May 2008 one was run over and killed on a highway in Decatur. In June 2008 three were relocated from farm ponds and suburbs both north and south of the river.
