There is a manufacturer by the name of Jet Performance Parts that makes programmers, modules among other items for various vehicles. I just bought one for an '03 Trailblazer with a 4.2 Litre engine in it. Retuning the stock program optimizes power & torque & along with that mileage is improved by 2 to 4 m.p.g. depending on your driving habits. If you have the 4.2 Litre engine you will need the plug in module that comes in a stage 1 or 2, the 2 being somewhat more aggressive changes in the tuning & requires premium fuel, but I think that the extra power & economy that it provides is more than worth the extra .20 cents or so to go from 87 to 93 octane. If you have the V-8 5.3 Litre, then you will need the programmer that plugs into the D.L.C. or data link connector located under the dash just in front of the drivers right leg when seated in the drivers seat. This is much like the plug in module, but with a few more features. They state that this does not void the warranty as it is just optimizing the spark & fuel timing curves for the engine. www.pcmforless.com They will reprogram your PCM for mileage and shift points and make the truck better to drive. The jet module will work for awhile however the learning aspect of the PCM will learn to negate the effects of the jetmodule. This is why the professionals must reprogram the PCM itself to make any long term gains in power and driveability.

You program the "computer" for a specific mileage between filter changes. It will display a message when it is nearing time for a change. See the owners manual for steps to program the computer module (instrument cluster module0. Carl On the Windstar, the default calculation is on Ford's recommended mileage interval - 5,000 miles.
