The book simply names them 'Winged Monkeys.' The Witch called them through a crown that allowed her to command them. She could only use the crown three times and when she used it to capture Dorothy, it was the last time she was able to call them to her bidding. In the movie, the leader of the Winged Monkeys was called Nikko by the Wicked Witch of the West.

It was done with trick Photography, like Bat sequences in Tarzan films- a flying ape with Bat-like characteristics ( Darwin Run amuck!) would be , if handled realistically, horrifying to a kiddie audience.

No. Real monkeys would have never been cooperative and patient enough to endure being dressed up in suits with hats. Flying would have really pushed them over the edge. I can't imagine what kind of a coup the film makers would have had on their hands then!

It is a trick queston. they were not played by actors but remotely controlled from overhead- like Bats in Vampire films. As they were not animate to begin with- they don't have life dates. There was a very similar devil bat sequence in one of the Tarzan films where Tarzan and his female friend were assaulted by Bats with huge wingspans and accurately up-scaled. this was intended to possibly cause a Number-One magnitude tidal wave in some theaters- monster or Horror characters.

Actually, the information above is rubbish, as far as I can tell. I can't imagine where the author would have obtained these falsehoods. For shame! The monkeys were people. Living, breathing little people. Scroll through the cast list. Google 'Danny Windsor'.

In the original film did one of the flying monkeys accidentally die?

I assume you are talking about Wizard Of Oz. Maybe, the flying monkeys were monsters- and bad-guy monsters at that. if one of them died accidentally ( as part of the plot) this would be no big deal. The idea of flying apes can be used to be quite frightening- if one mixed the chimpanzee and bat angles of presentationk, and monkeys are arboreal in nature ( Tree dwelling) I never cared much for Wizard of Oz, so... it might have happened.
