Very little is left of the Circus Maximus. It came in disuse after the 6th century. Some of its stone was quarried for building material to be used elsewhere. In 1587 Pope Sixtus V removed two obelisks. One of these was re-sited at the Piazza del Popolo. All the artifacts and most of the seating hve gone. Some of the starting gates have survived. The site was prone to flooding and was gradually covered by alluvial soil and debris. Only a grass covered outline of track and the outline of the barrier in the middle remain. The original track is now 6 metres below the current ground.

Archaeologists have found parts of the seating and the central barrier and the bend. Further research is hampered by the size of the site, the depth at which it lies and water-logging.

When was circus maximus builted?

The site for the Circus Maximus was selected by Rome's first king, Tarquinius Priscus, where he held "Ludi Romani" or Roman Games, to celebrate a victory over a Latin town. He laid the racecourse out between the Palatine and Adventine hills and the spectators could sit on the hillsides and watch the festivities. Over the years the arena was improved with seats, walls, spectator protection, etc. The exact date that Tarquinius completed his project is unclear.

What year was the circus maximus built?

The Circus Maximus in ancient Rome seemed to be a "work in progress" for most of its existence. It was originally built, in a primitive form, by the Etruscan king Tarquinius Priscus. This Priscus reigned from 616 to 579 BC so the circus was begun sometime during that time period. Through the years, other kings and politicians added seating to it, enlarged it, decorated it and generally made it more comfortable and accommodating for the spectator.

Why was the circus maximus built?

Originally, the Circus Maximus was made entirely out of wood. It was rebuilt and altered on a number of occasions, however, and in the end, it was mostly stone and concrete and some wood parts. There is a link below.

The Colosseum, the hippodrome Circus Maximus (and 3 others), theatres, public baths, etc. Gladiator fights are the most well-known entertainment of ancient Rome today. Do artifacts have to be old?

No, artifacts do not have to be old. An artifact is simply an object made by a human being, so it can be new or old. The significance of an artifact often lies in its cultural, historical, or aesthetic value rather than its age.
