If it is genuinely necessary for a man to hit a woman in order to defend himself, then yes, he can do so. Chivalrous or courteous behavior does not require you to allow yourself to be injured or killed by some psychotic female if you should be so unfortunate as to encounter such a person. But bear in mind that it is much more common for women to be physically attacked by men, than it is for men to be physically attacked by women. Verbal attacks are another matter, but there is no reason for a verbal attack to escalate into physical violence. If woman insults a man, the man is certainly free to insult her in return. Or to refuse to talk to her, if that produces a better result. Because women are generally more likely to be in danger from men, than men are to be in danger from women, it is likely that if a man does hit a woman, even purely in self defense, that man will be regarded with suspicion. It is farbetter to avoid violence if you possibly can. But nonetheless, you are allowed to defend yourself. No one is obligated to allow himself or herself to become a victim.
