One thing to remember about Medicare is that it is an individual plan. Your wife's earned quarters only counts for herself, and won't count for you. Here's a link to the Medicare Eligibility Tool on the Medicare website: http://www.medicare.gov/MedicareEligibility/home.asp?version=default&browser=IE%7C7%7CWindows+Vista&language=English

How many quarters are necessary to receive medicare benefits?

To be eligible for Medicare benefits in the United States, you generally need to have accumulated 40 quarters (or 10 years) of work credits. These credits are earned by working and paying Social Security taxes. However, there are certain circumstances in which individuals can qualify for Medicare benefits with fewer quarters, such as being married to someone who has earned enough credits. It is recommended to consult with the Social Security Administration to understand your particular situation.

How do you become eligible for social security?

At age 62 if you have enough earned credits (work periods throughout your life) you would become eligible for a reduced portion of your social security retirement if you waited until you were 65 years of age. At age 62 you would receive approx. 75% of what you would have received if you waited until you were 65 years old. Disability under social security prior to your retirement age (either 62 or 65) would depend on your medical condition and how disabled you would be. However you would still need enough work credits to be eligible.
