There is a trend in North America to put ever larger and more complex graphics onto broadcast channels. The channel ident in one corner has been around for many years and is used worldwide. The practice of trailing upcoming programs in the bottom third during other programs is largely restricted to North America. Most European and Asian broadcasts avoid doing this. The exceptions are a handful of US broadcasters who run European channels in the same style as their domestic channels (Disney is one example). Many would agree that it is distracting and annoying. There are far fewer people who would say that the bottom third trailers are welcome and enjoyable. They are far more limited in Europe for the simple reason that viewers will not tolerate the interruptions. North American viewers can make their own voices heard by writing to cable providers, networks and local channels to express their feelings. One letter will not change the minds of broadcasters but many letters will. For those who dislike the graphics enough, perhaps it is time to let the broadcasters know.
